The latest survey by the Finnish Game and Fisheries Research Institute shows larger populations of wolves and lynx. The agency estimates that at the end of last year there were 250-270 wolves and 1200 - 1250 lynx in Finland. Among other large predators, bear and wolverine populations remained at about the same level as in 2005. The institute puts their numbers at 800-850 and 140-150 respectively. About 100 bear cubs were seen, along with 200 lynx cubs, 25 wolf cubs and about the same number of young wolverines. The bear and wolf populations were concentrated in the North Karelia region. Some individuals cross the Russian border, leading to fluctuations in population levels. The estimates are based on a variety of databases, most importantly sightings by large predator monitors around the country. In 2006 there were more than 24,000 sightings of large predators, the largest number since recordkeeping began under the current system. YLE
