Finland has decided to take on more responsibility in the NATO-led crisis management operations in Afghanistan and Kosovo. Next summer Finland with take lead nation responsibility for the battle groups in KFOR operations. In Afghanistan, Finland is preparing to share alternating command with Sweden in ISAF operations in the north of the country. In addition, Finland is ready to take part in peacekeeping efforts in the African nation of Chad and the Central African Republic. According to Prime Minister Matti Vanhanen, the EU must first, howeve, decide if it will provide EU battle groups in Chad , or other EU fast reaction forces. Finland will take part in peacekeeping in Darfur, but will not send infantry troops. The Cabinet Committee on Foreign and Security Policy Friday issued a statement on international operations after discussions with also included President Tarja Halonen.
