Interviewed by the daily Kaleva, Räty pledged the support of the Union if transport unions and businesses agreed to organise roadblocks to force government's hand on the issue.
Referring to the Finnish Transport and Logistics organisation SKAL and the Finnish Bus and Coach Association, the AKT President said that the country's two largest transport industry interest groups are now in the driver's seat on the matter.
The transport industry is buckling under the impact of skyrocketing fuel prices. To address the situation, the AKT has proposed that the excise duties paid on fuel by transport contractors should either be waived entirely, or refunded to transport organisations.
Räty declared that the transport industry also deserves government support, since the state has pledged 170 million euros annually to shore up the wood processing industry.
"We must understand that the timber trailers will stay off the roads, if there's no support for transport contractors," he added.
AKT members met for a plenary session in Oulu on Saturday.
