Alma made the mandatory tender offer after raising its ownership stake to more than 30 percent.

Alma, publisher of the tabloid Iltalehti, the business daily Kauppalehti and the leading provincial daily Aamulehti, is prepared to pay more than 55 million euros for Talentum. It publishes the venerable economics magazine Talouselämä and the investment magazine Arvopaperi along with a range of professional literature, and also runs a direct marketing unit.

So far, Talentum's principal owners, investor Kai Mäkelä and the Ilmarinen pension fund, say they are not willing to sell their shares.

Alma has some 3,000 employees in 10 countries, while Talentum has a staff of just over 800.
