Employers Call for Forced End to Harbour Strike

The Confederation of Finnish Industries EK has severely criticised the harbour strike which began on Thursday. The group says that there should be a mechanism to force small key groups to settle.

EK’s leaders called for a thorough overhaul of Finland’s system of maintaining industrial peace. The group also expressed anger at the Finnish Transport Workers Union (AKT) and its chairman Timo Räty for the strike by stevedores, which shut down most of Finland’s foreign trade when it began Thursday morning.

The message from EK was that a small group going on strike are able to ruthlessly damage the Finnish economy which is already in crisis.

Sakari Tamminen, the chairman of the board of EK, is calling for changes to the whole system of industrial peace. He is urging the government and labour market organisations to enact quick measures to make it possible to compel unions like AKT to accept a settlement.
