Working Group Proposes Privatising Helsinki's Rails

A working group at the Ministry of Transport and Communications is proposing the privatisation of Helsinki's local rail traffic. The group is also recommending that passenger traffic in the rest of the country be put out to tender as well.

Bidding in the capital region would begin in 2018 at the earliest. That's when the current agreement between Helsinki Region Transport (HRT) and Finnish State Railways (VR) expires. The working group suggests that similar competitive bidding would be extended eventually into other urban areas and long haul train traffic.

The group submitted its proposal to the ministry on Tuesday.
