Paper: Jails slated for closure

Prisons under a threat of closure in the next few years include the lockup in Kerava, southern Finland, and the Pelso prison in the north, writes the provincial newspaper Iisalmen Sanomat.

The Criminal Sanctions Agency has carried out an inquiry looking into all the country’s jails. The study came up with two future options.

Under one scenario, the Kerava and Pelso prisons would be closed, as well as the Käyrä, Sulkava and Juuka open prisons.

The other option would shut the Hämeenlinna and Pyhäselkä jails in addition to the ones in Kerava and Pelso. In that case, open prisons to face closures would be Käyrä, Sulkava and Kestilä.

The Criminal Sanctions Agency will consider the matter on Thursday.

Earlier, the decision was made to shut the Hamina prison from the beginning of next year.
