Common responsibility campaign focuses on the elderly

The annual Common Responsibility Campaign organised by the Evangelical Lutheran Church begins on Sunday. This year, funds raised will to go to help single elderly people. The money raised will be channelled to seek out elderly people living alone and assist them to find help and services.

Proceeds will also be used to fund development aid projects in Cambodia.

The campaign is being organised this year by the Lutheran Bishop of Helsinki, Irja Askola. The campaign's patron, President Sauli Niinistö opened the collection on Yle TV1 at 12 noon on Sunday.

The Common Responsibility Campaign (known in Finnish as 'Yhteisvastuukeräys') is the annual fund raising campaign of the Finnish Evangelical Lutheran Church.

Some s60 percent of the proceeds are targeted towards international development work and emergency aid. Some 20 percent is used annually for a specially chosen cause in Finland while the remainder is earmarked for diaconal work carried out by the church and its parishes.

Last year's Common Responsibility Campaign collected a total of 4.1 million euros.
