Niinistö meets Obama in Stockholm

President Sauli Niinistö is meeting with US President Barack Obama on Wednesday evening at a dinner hosted by Swedish Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt. Before the meeting, Niinistö spoke out on possible military action against Syria.

They are expected to discuss foreign policy co-operation between the United States and Nordic countries, economic growth and development, and action against climate change.

Other Baltic and Nordic countries will be represented at the dinner by prime ministers, but President Niinistö attends as his office retains official responsibility for Finland’s foreign policy.

The arrangement has given rise to a so-called ‘two plate’ policy at EU summits, whereby both Prime Minister and President can attend if they wish. This time no such seating arrangement is necessary, as PM Jyrki Katainen will not be attending.

Before the meeting, Niinistö spoke to Yle about the Finnish stance on a possible military strike on Syria, which is expected to be on the agenda.

"Of course the use of chemical weapons is extremely serious. It's a war crime and a crime against humanity. This means that the UN Security Council has a great responsibility in this, and that every country on the council has a great responsibility," Niinistö replied.
