The ministry says that the risk of terrorism in Kenya remains high because of the situation in Somalia. Kenya is part of the AMISOM African Union operation aimed at combating the extremist al-Shabaab organisation in southern Somalia.
Al-Shabaab appears to have attacked a Nairobi shopping centre on Saturday in revenge for Kenyan involvement in the country. Finland’s Ministry for Foreign Affairs says that the risk of terror attacks in Nairobi remains high, with attacks on tourist locations possible.
Finns in Kenya are advised to avoid busy areas, remain alert and to follow the news media to stay abreast of developments. The ministry warns against travel to coastal areas within 150km of the Somali border, with the exception of the island of Lamu, and to inland areas within 60km of the frontier. EU citizens have been kidnapped in those areas in recent years.
