Parliamentary committee rubber stamps CAR deployment

Parliament’s Foreign Affairs Committee has approved a decision to send Finnish troops to serve as peacekeepers in the Central African Republic, despite expressing reservations about the mission's chances of success. The EU operation will be led by France.

Around 30 Finns will participate in the operation aimed at calming communal strife in the Central African Republic after Parliament’s Foreign Affairs Committee approved the plan. The committee did express concern about the effectiveness of the mission, however.

The committee is concerned that the EU might not be able to take control of and stabilize the situation, and that larger EU countries with the exception of France are not providing large numbers of troops.

In addition the committee approved the principle that all peacekeeping operations should in future provide it with a report detailing the strengths and weaknesses of the missions.
