In a feisty encounter in Minsk, Finland was eventually beaten 5-2 by their eastern neighbours in the final of the Ice Hockey World Championships. Although Russia took the lead in the first period, Iiro Pakarinen equalised just before the break to ensure Finland finished the period on level terms.
The Finns then went ahead early in the second period when Olli Palola scored, but that was to be the last of the Finnish goals.
As Russia powered ahead with goals from Malkin, Ovechkin, Zaripov and Tihinov, Finland racked up 28 penalty minutes. That compared to just 12 for the Russians, prompting some allegations of bias from fans on social media.
The championship is Russia's fifth, while Finland's silver medal is the seventh time they have won that prize.
