Going to Estonia? Remember your passport

Finns and other EU citizens travelling to Estonia between Sunday and Wednesday will need proof of identity. The increased border control measure is due to US president Barack Obama’s visit to Estonia next week.

The four days of identity checks will be in force for all passengers. Incoming travellers from Latvia to the south can only enter Estonia via temporary border posts.

US president Barack Obama will be in Tallinn on Wednesday. His state visit is the second-ever by a United States president since George W. Bush met with then-president Arnold Rüütel.

The Gulf of Finland coast guard reminds people making their way to the southern neighbour state that only passports or legally compatible ID cards can be used as official documentation. Finnish driver’s licenses do not count.

A person travelling without a legal ID will be turned away from Estonia, and will also be guilty of a mild state border offense.
