Suspected airspace violation over Åland

A Polish state transport aircraft is suspected of a brief violation of the demilitarized airspace of Finland's Åland Islands on Friday afternoon. The incident was described by defense officials as "not serious".

The Polish plane entered Åland's airspace for about one minute at around 6PM.  Finland's Åland Islands are a demilitarized zone under international law.

A Finnish Defense Forces spokesman said that the incident was not serious in nature.

It is being speculated that the plane, headed southwards from the Gulf of Finland, may have strayed off course due to faulty routing information from its own flight control authorities.
