Veterans' Day ceremonies in Hämeenlinna

Today, Monday, is National Veterans’ Day in Finland and the main ceremony will be held in Hämeenlinna. On this date, April 27, 1945 the last German troops left Finland, and the three country border of Norway, Sweden and Finland was created. The final fighting in the Lapland War ended 70 years ago today.

President Sauli Niinistö, who will participate in the ceremony - which is set to begin at 1 p.m. local time - is to present The Order of the White Rose of Finland medals to 1,803 veterans.

Niinistö will also issue Orders of the Day of the Commander-in-Chief to veterans and members of the women’s voluntary defense.

There are some 26,000 surviving veterans still alive today. The average age of the vets is over 90 years.

The ceremony will be televised live starting at 1 PM on TV1 and afterwards on Yle Areena.
