Nokian Tyres to shed 150 jobs

Finnish tyre company Nokian Tyres announced plans Friday to scale back on 150 jobs. The company says as sales in Russia fall, it will reduce production of tyres for private vehicles and streamline factory operations.

Nokian Tyres will begin co-determination talks with all of its 900 staffers with a view to culling 150 jobs. The retrenchment negotiations are due to begin next week.

The company said that the job reduction talks are the result of a decline in sales of tyres for private cars in Russia and former Soviet states. Because of the poor sales outlook for the product, Nokian Tyres said it will cut back on production, rationalise factory operations and implement a restructuring programme.

The company said it hopes the changes will save some eight million euros.

Located in the Tampere region, Nokian Tyres manufactures tyres for cars, trucks, buses and heavy equipment. It is home to the world’s only permanent winter tyre testing facility.
