More than half of Finnish residents would be willing to give up increases to their wages for the next five years, according to a poll commissioned by the media group Lännen Media. Survey results showed that 54 percent of respondents would agree to a freeze their pay slips at their existing level for an extended period of time.
Those in most support of the measure identified themselves as Centre Party, National Coalition Party and Greens Party supporters. Voters that prefer the Social Democratic Party were the most opposed to the idea. Enthusiasm for accepting a wage freeze grows as income grows: 64 percent of respondents in the highest income bracket approved, while just 46 percent of respondents earning the lowest levels of income supported the move.
Over half of the survey respondents also looked favourably on changing weekday holidays to working days, with supporters of the Christian Democrats showing the most opposition.
The market researcher Taloustutkimus interviewed 1,003 Finnish residents for the survey, making the margin of error 3.2 percentage points in either direction.
