Finland decided on Friday to deploy more troops as part of the EU’s operation against human trafficking in the Mediterranean region. A maximum of 20 more soldiers will be sent.

Finland is gradually ramping up its participation in the EUNAVFOR Med crisis management operation in the Mediterranean against human smuggling.

So far just eight Finnish officers are taking part, but that number is set to rise by up to 20.

President Sauli Niinistö and the Council of State’s foreign and security policy committee confirmed on Friday that Finland will step up its role in the operation.

Also discussed at the meeting were the situations in Ukraine and the Middle East. The president and ministers assessed Finland’s role in training security forces in northern Iraq as part of the international effort against the terrorist group ISIS.
