Inspector Timo Viipuri described last night as "busier" than a normal weekend for the Helsinki Police Department. The city's Rescue Services first aid units were also hard at work, responding to 250 calls instead of the 150 that can come in on a typical Saturday night. Many of those calls resulted from excessive drinking.
According to police in the South-West Finland district, most areas were calm with the exception of the city of Turku where police cells station cells were already filled to capacity before midnight. Two men in central Turku sustained serious injuries in a knifing incident.
Police in Tampere reported more than a dozen cases of assault.
In the East Finland district, twice as many police are on duty compared to regular weekend staffing. Police there reported dealing with several cases of domestic violence and drunken driving. Around a dozen people were taken into custody overnight for assault.
