Continued outgoing traffic taking Finns to their cottages and other destinations died down by 2 pm today Saturday, the Finnish Transport Agency's Tampere traffic centre reports.
"Our monitoring points indicate that no more jams are forming. There are monitoring stations all across the country and the information they send us is in real time," duty officer Jori Hildén says.
The worst traffic jams were to be found at the split between Road 4 and Road 5 north of Heinola, and on Road 9 from Tampere towards Orivesi.
"Accidents were completely avoided today, the pace has been steady and conditions good," Hildén says.
The Midsummer return traffic is predicted to begin at 12 noon on Sunday. Congestion is unlikely as many vacationers will stay at their cabins and other locations to begin their summer holidays.
