Migri to update security assessments for Iraq, Somalia, and Afghanistan

Following the Swedish Migration Agency's reevaluation of its security assessment of Iraq, Finnish Immigration Service (Migri) says it's also reevaluating its assessment of Iraq as a safe place to return asylum seekers. However, Migri stresses that any potential amendment would rely more on Finnish administrative law than on decisions made by its neighbour.

Finnish Immigration Service Migri says that if it changes its security assessment of Iraq as a safe place to return asylum seekers, thousands for negative decisions would need to be reevaluated.

In addition to its security assessment of Iraq, Migri will also re-consider its security assessments in January for Somalia and Afghanistan -- two other countries Finland has deemed safe for returning asylum seekers to.

The news follows on the heels of Saturday's announcement that Sweden's Migration Agency has changed its security assessment of Iraq owing to the ongoing armed conflict and deteriorating human rights in the country.

Migri is stressing, however, that Finnish administrative law has a greater effect on Finland's security assessments than assessments made by other countries.
