Finnish Customs raid Åland Islands post office in tax fraud, doping, smuggling probe

Finnish Customs conducted a raid on a post office in the Åland Islands on Tuesday as part of an investigation into suspected a tax fraud, doping and smuggling ring. Officers questioned several people and detained others as part of the operation.

Customs officers descended on a post office in the Åland Islands on Tuesday afternoon as part of a months-long investigation into a ring suspected of committing tax fraud and engaging in doping and smuggling activities.

During the operation, officials questioned several individuals and some arrests were made.

In an online statement, customs officials said that an ongoing investigation into the suspected offences focused on aggravated tax fraud, aggravated doping crimes, smuggling and the unauthorised practicing of professional healthcare activities.

On Wednesday, Finnish Customs told the Finnish News Agency that it would not disclose any further information about the ongoing probe at this stage.

According to the local paper, Ålandstidningen, the case involves a collaboration between the postal service provide and a British online store. Deliveries from the web store were transferred to the Åland Islands for tax purposes.

The paper added that among the persons detained was the deputy CEO of the local post office.
