Finland saw in the New Year in unseasonably mild but blustery weather, with Helsinki's public fireworks display cancelled due to the windy conditions.
Southwest Finland police fined dozens of people for dangerous use or illegal possession of fireworks, while Oulu and Eastern Finland police said that they had seen fireworks directed at people or buildings.
Southwest Finland police said fireworks had been let off among crowds, and fired from balconies.
One dangerous situation developed in central Helsinki, when a young man began firing rockets towards the crowd at a concert just after midnight (see video, above).
Security staff intervened quickly and, as of Sunday afternoon, the security company had not heard of any injuries related to the incident.
Helsinki police said on Sunday afternoon that nobody had been detained at that location for fireworks offences.
Fines for minors
Fireworks were also confiscated from children, who are not allowed to set them off.
Southwest Finland said in a press release that dozens of people were fined for illegal possession or dangerous use of fireworks.
"In an unfortunate number of cases, the person we dealt with was underage," read the statement.
Injuries sustained
By Sunday morning at 10am Oulu police said that one person had been injured by fireworks. In Helsinki there were injuries to nine people, of whom four required hospital treatment.
Helsinki emergency services also extinguished several small fires sparked by fireworks.
"They were fired towards bins, exploded among the rubbish and all kinds of vandalism occurred," said Toni Fohl of Helsinki Emergency Services.
In Helsinki one residential property and one school building caught fire.
"They were not linked to fireworks, more like New Year partying," said Fohl.
Several eye injuries treated in Helsinki
In the Helsinki and Uusimaa region several people with eye injuries had been treated by Sunday morning.
The first firework injuries had occurred as early as Friday.
Tero Kivelä, Chief Physician at the region's Ophthalmology Centre, said that five people had already been treated and one was on the way for treatment.
"The injuries that occurred further from Helsinki will only be treated after midday," said Kivelä.
All the injuries so far had been relatively mild, with no surgery required.
Assaults and unrest
Antisocial behaviour, assaults, domestic incidents and traffic offences kept police busy in different parts of the country.
In Oulu the New Year rush continued until 8am, with several incidents involving alcohol and fireworks.
