Prosecutors have filed rape charges against National Coalition Party politician Matia Pajula at Helsinki District Court.

The charges were reported first by Helsingin Sanomat.

Pajula, who serves on Helsinki City Council and chairs the board of the capital region's transport body HSL, denied the charges in a blog post.

"The charge is shocking and I take it extremely seriously," wrote Pajula, who added that he hoped the case would be heard as soon as possible.

Pajula was chair of the NCP youth wing in 2020-2021, and was elected to the city council in 2021. He has been part of government formation negotiations after April's parliamentary election.
