The National Coalition Party's (NCP) nominees for Foreign Minister, Elina Valtonen, and Minister of Defence, Antti Häkkänen, have both stated that the new government will aim to strengthen Finland's ties to the West.

The two remain nominees for now, and can only be appointed after the President officially anoints the new government with party chair Petteri Orpo as Prime Minister.

Valtonen said that closer relations with the United States will be one of the Orpo government's top priorities regarding foreign policy.

"In this day and age, it is also socially and culturally integral that we take care of Euro-Transatlantic relations," the Foreign Minister-to-be said.

As for China, Valtonen described the country as an essential trading partner, but also a competitor.

"It is important that in the future we take a better look at our urgent dependencies on China - both in regards to society and in trade - and systematically work to reduce unhealthy dependencies," Valtonen noted.

Häkkänen added that Finland would also be looking into strengthening security cooperation with the United Kingdom.

Continued support for Ukraine

The duo further pledged continued Finnish support for Ukraine.

Häkkänen said that support for Ukraine will continue to be a key part of Finland's security policy.

"Ultimately, this is about the fact that the outcome of the war will determine the security environment in Europe and Finland for decades to come. If the war ends in a Russian victory, the security situation will be significantly more detrimental to Finland for a long time to come," he said, adding that this is why a Ukrainian victory is 'essential'.

Valtonen added that she would work to ensure that Ukraine one day becomes a member of the EU and part of the European security infrastructure.

Häkkänen will be taking over a changed Ministry of Defence, following Finland's accession to Nato and the added responsibility relating to matters of international security.

At the same time, he said that it was also important that the will to defend Finland remained high.

"Younger generations must retain confidence in this society and a sense of unity so that support for conscription and the will to defend the country remains high," Häkkänen said.
