The southwestern town of Naantali is preparing to remove ex-minister Vilhelm Junnila (Finns) as the chair of its municipal council.
Turun Sanomat reports that the proposal to remove Junnila got the necessary 11 councillors' support at the last minute.
The Left Alliance had been preparing an initiative along these lines, but in the end the National Coalition wrote the proposal.
The only leftist on the council, Harri Palomäki, signed on to support the initiative. The other 10 signatories come from the National Coalition Party. There are a total of 16 councillors in the NCP group.
The council will now decide whether to establish a committee to prepare to fire the chair. That decision will require majority support from Naantali's elected councillors.
Junnila told TS that he was disappointed with the proposal to fire him.
"The proposal feels strange, because my leadership and actions in decision-making have been received well across party lines," said Junnila. "This is excessive."
He said that removing a local MP from his position at the council would not serve the town's interests.
Junnila made international headlines this summer during and after his ten-day stint as Minister for Economic Affairs. He was forced to resign over Nazi references and comments, campaigning on far-right themes and unclear information about his CV, education and business history.
The government coalition partner the Swedish People's Party declined to support Junnila in a vote of confidence, but he survived as several opposition MPs were absent from the vote. That was only a temporary reprieve however, as he resigned a few days later.
