The All Points North podcast casts its gaze skywards this week, hoping to catch a glimpse of the aurora borealis natural light display, commonly known as the northern lights.

We hear about the aurora-fuelled boom in tourism in Finnish Lapland, gather tips on how and when to see the lights, and learn about some of the mythology behind the phenomenon.

The science, myths and social media power of Finland's aurora borealis

Lapland-based space physicist Esa Turunen tells the show that hundreds of years ago the Sámi people of northern Finland believed that the northern lights were living beings.

"If the Northern lights were very bright, they thought it was better to hide under their sleigh because otherwise the lights might come down and take them up," he explains.

Nature photographer Aki Mikkola, a native of Finnish Lapland, also shares his tips on how to capture the perfect aurora image.

"In the autumn, when there is no snow, no ice, I like to be near water, like a small lake pond. It is great when the water is standing still to get the reflection from the still water, so you get a double amount of northern lights," Mikkola tells the show.

Also in this week's show, we send our colleague Daniel Kähler, from Radio Bremen in Germany, to the cinema to watch the latest movie by renowned Finnish film director Aki Kaurismäki.

"It’s amazing to see that although the atmosphere is relatively dark, there is some kind of love story and some humour in "Fallen Leaves". This mix makes it quite special I would say," he tells us.
