Antte Lauhamaa, who participated in the search operation for the mother and son killed in the Lapland avalanche, shared a video with Yle depicting the conditions of the fateful Tuesday evening at the top of Pyhäkuru on the Pallastunturi fell.

Lauhamaa took part in the search as a police officer. He is also an experienced free skier and snow safety expert.

Lauhamaa described the wind as being so strong that in the gusts he had to take cover in a lower position to avoid falling.

"My cheekbones were freezing, even though I was wearing a snowmobile helmet. The wind still got through a small gap somewhere," Lauhamaa said.

Lauhamaa is also experienced mountain climber.

"The last time I experienced such a strong wind was probably five years ago. Back then I was in Sweden and the wind was 40 metres per second, this felt the same because it was so cold. It is rare to have such cold weather and such a strong wind at the same time," Lauhamaa told Yle.

Strong winds will continue on Tuesday night into Wednesday, with the weather possibly improving on Thursday.
