Yle poll: A leap in support for the Finns Party

The order of the top three parties remains unchanged, but Yle's latest poll suggests the Finns Party are gaining ground.

Yle's latest party support poll shows a 2.4-percentage-point increase for the Finns Party since the previous survey, bringing their support up to exactly 20 percent.

The National Coalition Party (NCP) remains in the lead, with support slightly down to 22.4 percent. The opposition Social Democratic Party (SDP) has also held its second position, however, their popularity has dropped to 20.4 percent.

According to Tuomo Turja, research director of market research company Taloustutkimus, the two most interesting points of note are the rise in support for the Finns Party and the fall in support for the SDP. Popularity for both parties is now at a similar level to during last spring's parliamentary elections.

Turja says this shows the Finns Party has been able to activate their own voter base.

"Support has increased most among the young, i.e. under 35, but also at the other end, also among pensioners," he said.

Survey participants were asked which party's candidate they would vote for if the parliamentary elections were held now. Just under 2,000 interviewees answered.

The Finns Party has traditionally been a good election party, with their popularity increasing closer to election days, Turja said. The same happened to former party chair Jussi Halla-aho in his recent presidential election campaign.

"It will be interesting to see how the support of the Finns Party changes in the coming months, or whether it was a bounce caused by the Halla-aho election result," said Turja.

The survey's margin of error is estimated at two percentage points.
