City of Helsinki announces salary hikes for 4,500 workers

Raises will go to early childhood education teachers, youth counsellors and others.

More than 4,500 people who work for the City of Helsinki are set to get pay raises, the City announced in a press release on Wednesday.

The City said the raises were part of its salary development programme, which was launched in 2019 to increase the city's attractiveness as an employer, among other things.

Meanwhile, all city employees are to receive general raises, in line with collective agreements.

This year the salary development programme's raises will go to "early childhood education teachers, early childhood education S2 teachers (Finnish as a second language), early childhood education sociologists, early childhood education special needs teachers and rotating early childhood education special needs teachers," the city's release stated, adding that this group of nearly 3,000 employees will each receive an additional 164 euros per month.

Around 300 youth counsellors in the city's culture and leisure division will also see monthly raises of 75 euros.

The city's social, health and rescue sector workers, senior social workers, child welfare supervisors, psychologists and neuropsychologists, among others, are to receive monthly raises of 200 euros, while speech therapists will get a 300-euro boost.

"The City’s salary development programme is a unique mechanism in the municipal sector for raising the salaries of different professionals. The increases make our salaries more competitive, which improves the quality of services we provide to the residents. This year’s increases cover, in particular, the personnel groups that work with children and young people," the City's HR chief, Petri Lumijärvi, said in the release.

The allocation of the salary development programme's raises changes from year to year, across various departments.
