Police in Central Finland have confirmed to Yle that Finland's Tax Administration submitted a request for investigation last year in relation to a "certain person" suspected of failing to fulfill tax obligations on income received from the European Parliament.
Tabloid newspaper Ilta-Sanomat reported on Monday that Finns Party MEP Teuvo Hakkarainen is the subject of the investigation request.
However, the police declined to confirm to Yle the name of the suspect under investigation, adding that the probe is at a very early stage and there are no further details to provide at this time.
Yle was unable to reach Hakkarainen on Monday afternoon for comment.
Helsingin Sanomat reported last week that the controversial MEP will stand for re-election in June's European parliamentary vote — but without the backing of his party, after Finns Party secretary Harri Vuorenpää said he would be excluded from the party's candidate list.
Hakkarainen has been no stranger to controversy during his political career, having been convicted of assault and sexual harassment as a member of the Finnish Parliament.
