Police in Finland have issued a warning to parents and schools about a challenge spreading on the social media platform TikTok, which encourages children and young people to bring a knife to school on Wednesday 24 April.

In a statement published on Wednesday, police added a reminder that it is illegal to bring sharp weapons to a school, or to carry them in public places.

If a child is found to be carrying a weapon, police will investigate and a child protection order will be filed, the statement noted.

Reports that the challenge is spreading on TikTok, a short-format video sharing platform, were passed on by parents and schools around Finland.

Schools in different parts of the country sent messages to parents via the Wilma messaging system, urging them to discuss the matter with their children.

The news of the challenge comes in the wake of a tragic school shooting in the city of Vantaa earlier this month.
