Police suspect that Traficom's vehicle registration database was targeted in a hack that exposed the personal details of owners of around 65,000 vehicles in Finland.
Traficom, the Finnish Transport and Communications Agency, announced the data breach last Friday, saying it had reported the incident to police and the Data Protection Ombudsman.
Police are investigating the matter as a case of aggravated data hacking, according to detective chief inspector Lauri Huittinen.
The person or people behind the hack managed to obtain the full names, addresses and personal ID number of both the first and eventual second owners of approximately 65,000 vehicles, police noted in a press release issued on Wednesday afternoon.
People exposed by the data breach owned or maintained vehicles with the registration numbers from AAA-xxx to ALJ-xxx, according to police.
In its announcement about the breach last week, Traficom noted that the incident was related to another database-related matter at the Positive Credit Register, "in which credit information record extracts had been falsely requested" from the register.
