Finns Party minister Rydman to face confidence vote

The motion by three opposition parties is in connection with an article published by Helsingin Sanomat in 2022, which detailed Rydman's alleged harassment of young women.

Three opposition parties — the Left Alliance, the Social Democrats and the Greens — will jointly submit a no confidence motion regarding Minister of Economic Affairs Wille Rydman (Finns) next Tuesday.

The Left Alliance announced its intention earlier this week to table a confidence motion against Rydman.

The motion is in connection with an article published by Helsingin Sanomat in 2022, which detailed Rydman's alleged harassment of young women.

Earlier this month, prosecutors dropped two cases against Rydman for suspected offences including aggravated defamation, aggravated dissemination of information violating personal privacy, and a breach of confidentiality, citing insufficient evidence.

In a statement, Jussi Saramo, chair of the Left Alliance parliamentary group, said that Rydman's "ruthless attacks on independent media, journalists and individuals are unacceptable".

Support for Rydman from government parties

In their statement, opposition parties highlighted Prime Minister Petteri Orpo's (NCP) comments on the matter.

Earlier this week, Orpo said that Rydman could not be a minister for his party, but he added however that he is nonetheless satisfied with Rydman's work within the cabinet.

The Finns Party has shown confidence in Rydman, with party leader and Minister of Finance Riikka Purra stating in Parliament on Thursday that Rydman has performed his duties well.

Additionally, the Swedish People's Party (SPP) announced that they would vote in favour of Rydman and the continuation of the government.

However, the SPP's youth wing issued a statement on Friday afternoon saying it believes Rydman should resign.

"We call on Orpo to show leadership and set boundaries for Minister Rydman," the youth organisations' statement said, a stance that contrasts significantly with that of the parent party.

The government is required to respond to the interpellation question by 3 July.
