The liberal political group Renew Europe has elected MEP-elect Anna-Maja Henriksson of the Swedish People's Party to serve as one of its vice-chairs, the SPP announced in a release on Wednesday.

"I'm grateful to have been elected as a vice-chair of Renew Europe and look forward to being a newcomer to the group and immediately getting a chance to work on its board. I'm glad to be able to continue long-term and constructive work for the SPP in the European Parliament," Henriksson said in an SPP release.

"We need a strong Nordic flank in the EU, in today's world situation, and I'm a bridge builder who wants to work together for a united Europe. We will continue to support Ukraine, strengthen Europe's competitiveness and work hard for our core values — democracy, the rule of law and human rights," she continued.

A veteran Finnish politician, the 60-year-old Henriksson stepped down as leader of the SPP in mid-June, most recently serving in PM Petteri Orpo's (NCP) cabinet as education minister.

She was the sole SPP candidate that secured a seat in the European Parliamentary elections earlier this month.

French MEP Valerie Hayer is set to continue as Renew Europe's group chair, according to the release.

Both the SPP and Finland's Centre Party belong to Renew Europe.
