Going forward, Auroraliiga will be the new name of the top-tier league of women's ice hockey in Finland.
Formerly known as Naisten Liiga (women's league in English), naming the team Auroraliiga follows the branding direction of the National League, the women's top-tier football league in Finland that eschewed gender-prefixes in 2020.
"Updating the name and brand is the result of much thought and hard work and an important symbolic act — it's high time to play hockey without prefixes," Auroraliiga Director Henni Laaksonen said in a press release.
The new name stems not only from Finland's Arctic geography, but also the name of the Aurora Borealis Cup, the trophy awarded to the women's league champions in Finland.
Auroraliiga's regular season kicks off during the first week of September, with all teams competing for league points in a tournament in Turku.
