The suspect in a fatal hit-and-run collision between two scooters in Espoo’s Leppävaara district last week has admitted being involved in the incident, police have said.
A man was seriously injured in the collision, which occurred at about 9pm last Thursday at the intersection of Huvilinnanmäki and Huvilinnantie, and he later died in hospital. Police believe the older man was riding a scooter across a pedestrian crossing when he was struck at high speed by a scooter coming from the opposite direction.
Tabloid newspaper Iltalehti reported earlier on Monday that the suspect is between the ages of 15 and 18, and therefore criminally liable for their actions if police determine that a crime has been committed in relation to the fatal crash.
Detective Inspector Hannu Kontola, who is leading the investigation, told Yle that very few details can be publicly revealed at this stage. He also declined to comment on whether substance abuse had been a factor in the collision.
The suspect is understood to have fled the scene in the immediate aftermath of the crash, but contacted police on Friday after reports that the other driver had died began to appear in news media.
"The course of events has become quite clear for us, but we are still working to find out more all the time," Kontola said.
The incident is being investigated by the police as suspected offences of aggravated negligent homicide, aggravated endangerment of traffic safety, and leaving the scene of a traffic accident without permission.
