Purra: Finns Party backs anti-racism campaign but unlikely to commit to it

Finance Minister Riikka Purra said that her Finns Party is unlikely to specifically commit to an anti-racism programme, drawn up in response to statements by party ministers.

Finance Minister and Finns Party chair Riikka Purra has elaborated on her previous comments regarding her party’s commitment to the government's anti-racism campaign.

Last year, the Finns Party committed to the memo that formed the basis for the anti-racism action programme, she said in a social media post on Wednesday.

"Four government parties took part in compiling the programme. So we are involved, just like the three other government parties," Purra wrote on X.

According to Purra, it is unlikely that the party’s board will make a separate decision about committing to the campaign.

She also criticised media coverage of the issue.

"Some of the media have a strong desire to [act as] an independent party in politics and to make up issues in their own way," she alleged.

On Tuesday, Prime Minister Petteri Orpo (NCP) presented the government's anti-racism campaign alone.

That same day, the Finns Party was meeting in Kouvola, southeast Finland, where Purra commented on the campaign to the media.

The government's anti-racism campaign has garnered criticism from various sides. MP Jani Mäkelä, the chair of Finns Party parliamentary group, has expressed doubts about its necessity.

Orpo announced plans for the campaign nearly a year ago after a string of scandals involving old far-right and racist social media posts by newly minted Finns Party ministers, which threatened to collapse the governing coalition in its first months in office.
