Strong winds delay ferries' arrival in Helsinki

Strong winds have made it considerably more difficult for large ships to use the narrow channel on the harbour's approach.

Strong winds have disrupted large passenger ferries trying to reach Helsinki harbour.

Both Viking and Silja Line ferries from Stockholm have been waiting for calmer conditions before they attempt to transit the Kustaanmiekka channel, an 81-metre-wide route into the harbour between Suomenlinna island and Vallisaari.

For example, the Silja Serenade arriving from Stockholm waited in the Gulf of Finland until conditions allowed it to use the channel.

Viking Line commercial director Minna Tuorila said on Thursday morning that the Gabriella ferry was also waiting for calmer conditions.

"The wind is coming from a bad direction towards Kustaanmiekka," said Tuorila.

Gabriella left Stockholm last night. The smaller Viking XPRS did manage to leave for Tallinn on schedule this morning, however.

Tuorila said that winds were gusting at 28 metres per second in the channel.
