The Finnish Kennel Club has reported an eight percent drop in the number of dogs registered last year, with the total coming to 40,400 hounds.
There had been an uptick during the Covid pandemic, with people getting more pets. The high of nearly 53,000 came in 2021.
Last year the number had already dropped down below that recorded in 2019. Labrador Retrievers were the most popular breed, as they have been since 2009.
The most popular dog names in 2024 were Luna, Kerttu and Sulo, according to the club.
The data comes from the club's Omakoira mobile app, which has records of more than 70,000 dogs' names. Hertta, Hilla, Elli, Nala, Hilma, Bruno and Frida rounded out the top ten names.
