Finland's under-20 men's hockey team took silver at the World Junior Ice Hockey Championships after a heartbreaking overtime loss to the United States in the final.

Teddy Stiga got the winning goal for the Americans after 8:04 minutes of overtime, finally beating Finnish goaltender Petteri Rimpinen.

The Young Lions had started the game well, leading 3-1 early in the second period, before the US recovered to tie the game 3-3 and pile on the pressure with Rimpinen pulling off world class saves to keep the scores level until overtime.

Rimpinen saved 36 out of 40 shots during the game, with his opposite number saving 21 of 24. Despite the defeat, the Finns were pleased with their showing.

"It was awesome throughout the tournament," Rimpinen told IIHF.com.

"I have a good feeling about how our team played, the way I played, and stuff. It's, of course, kind of sad to lose, but I think we played [in a way] people didn't expect from us. So I'm really proud of the team, how we grew during this tournament."

Finland had beaten neighbours Sweden in the semi-final on Saturday night, and Slovakia in the quarter finals.
