Alko sales see sharp decline in 2024

Alko sales have dropped since June, when a new law allowed supermarkets to sell fermented alcoholic beverages containing up to eight percent alcohol.

Finland's state-owned alcohol chain Alko saw a significant dip in sales last year.

Last year, Alko sold 71.2 million litres of beverages, or about seven percent less than in 2023. The product categories include spirits, beer, wines and alcohol-free beverages.

Alko sales have declined since last June, when Finland's laws were changed to allow shops and supermarkets to sell fermented alcoholic drinks with up to eight percent alcohol content.

The previous limit for alcohol sold in non-Alko shops was 5.5 percent.

Following the law reform, Alko's sales are 10 percent lower than two years ago.

According to Alko, the law change has led to a decrease in sales across all product categories.
