This winter's lowest temperature was recorded in Finnish Lapland in the early hours of Tuesday.
The mercury dropped to -39.6 degrees Celsius in Savukoski, eastern Finnish Lapland, on Tuesday, marking the coldest temperature recorded this winter, according to the Finnish Meteorological Institute (FMI).
This reading beats this winter’s previous cold record, which was also measured at the same observation station in January, when the temperature dropped to -38.9C.
Tuesday is seeing cold weather throughout Finland, with daytime temperatures ranging from -10C in the south to -30C up north.
Meanwhile, birdwatchers have reported several sightings of early migratory birds in southwest Finland. However, a longer cold spell could force these birds to temporarily return south.
