Prime Minister Petteri Orpo (NCP) on Sunday said Finland can still rely on the United States as an ally, affirming Finland's strong ties with the US.

Speaking to reporters, Orpo said he was confused and saddened by Friday's angry exchange in the White House between the Ukrainian President and US leaders.

Orpo, however, stressed Finland's good relations with both Republicans and Democrats.

"Still, it's important to acknowledge that the United States has changed," he told the media.

European leaders are convening in London on Sunday for a meeting hosted by British Prime Minister Keir Starmer to discuss defence cooperation for Ukraine. Finnish President Alexander Stubb is representing Finland at the gathering.

Leaders from around Europe, including Finland's Alexander Stubb, are at a summit in London to discuss the war in Ukraine.

Another special European summit on Ukraine is scheduled for Thursday. Orpo said the most important decisions then will focus on maintaining pressure on Russia and establishing guidelines for strengthening European defence.

According to Orpo, Ukraine has one of the strongest armies in Europe right now.

"Their soldiers are fighting horrible battles all the time," he said.

Orpo also said the EU should commit to Ukraine becoming a member of the bloc by the 2030s.

"In my opinion, it also sends a strong message to Ukraine and Russia that Ukraine is a part of Europe," he added.
