Marja Raisoma lives with her family and pet dog Filomena in Kirkonummi, about 30km west of Helsinki.
On Tuesday morning, Raisoma's husband and nine-year-old dog accompanied her to the local train stop in Tolsa to catch a train to the capital. Filomena — or Filo — belongs to the whole family, but she has always been particularly fond of Marja.
After Raisoma got on the train, her husband and Filo headed back home, which is undergoing renovations. At some point after their return, the dog managed to open a door and disappear without anyone noticing.
Some time later, as Raisoma was at a meeting in the capital, she received a text message from a friend asking about a photo she'd just seen on Facebook.
The photo was of a dog standing on the Tolsa train platform, and sure enough, it looked a little bit like Filo.
At Raisoma thought at first that it couldn't possibly be their dog. After all, Filo was supposed to be at home with her husband.
But upon closer inspection, she was certain it was Filo.
Raisoma immediately called her husband, who was working remotely from home, and asked him to check on the dog.
He told his wife that an outside door was left open and that Filo was indeed missing.
Helping hands, improvised leash
Increasingly worried, Raisoma asked her husband to drive to Helsinki so that they could figure out how to find their dog. A call to emergency services helped.
"The emergency centre called back and said 'hey, we found the dog. It's on the train with someone, here's their number'," Raisoma said.
"[Filo] walked 1.5km to the station on her own and waited on the platform for a while with other people. And when the train came, she walked right on board," she explained.
Not long after that, Filo was reunited with her owners at Helsinki Central Railway Station.
Raisoma said she was very grateful to the people that helped Filo on her journey. She even hugged the woman who minded the dog at the station before they were reunited.
According to Raisoma, the dog had no problems on her adventure.
"On the contrary, the whole train carriage was clearly involved," she said, explaining that passengers tried looking for Filo's owner and cared for the dog.
"One person even gave Filo their own dog's collar. Someone even donated their belt, because no one had a proper leash. That's how Filo ended up at the train station, and the story has a happy ending," she explained.
