King of Circles

(Find me at 50 Watts Books.)

July 2023 update: 50 Watts now publishes an English-language translation of this book...a mere 13 years after featuring it here.

This 1971 book by Kiyoshi Awazu was going to be part of a larger post of Japanese graphic design... until I admitted to myself that it is the best thing ever and deserves its own post. Please translate the title for me in the comments and I'll add it to the post.

I featured Awazu only once before (in Give Us Back Man) but I love his work and I'm tempted to post it all the time (especially his "fingerprint" works). Butdoesitfloat covered him last year and I suggest you check out their page.

update: The title is King of Circles (Maru no Osama). Thank you to the commenters, especially Colin who added that it is "volume 2 in a text book series called 'Science Friend' (Kagaku no Tomo)" and that "the gist of the text is a number of different (mostly round) objects claim to be the "King of Circles," in a variety of ways meant to be entertaining to small children."
