*damn I miss my weekly #guitar shopping trips around the Toronto area. Looking back, I realize now that roughly 85% of my face-to-face (real, I mean. Not social media) social life revolved around guitar shopping! And that personal contact just evaporated almost two years ago, causing me to sink gradually into isolation and madness! 🤣

From a photography perspective I really couldn’t ask for a more aesthetically pleasing and photogenic #guitar. But I do have one small photography-specific complaint to the designers at #Gibson about the 295: the arched section that you guys put around the pickup selector switch makes for some weird, asymmetrical-looking shadows in a lot of pictures! You can sort of see the hump around the switch in this shot. It looks perfectly fine except when the light hits it the wrong way. Then it casts a wonky shadow across the top of the guitar. The result is you can’t just point and shoot with this guitar in any lighting setup and be guaranteed wonk-free results every time…you have really play around with the positioning of the guitar and/or the light source to get it to look not weird! Now, I’m not an inordinately lazy person*…but getting that shadow to not look bizarre causes a lot more work for me than it should! If you guys wouldn’t mind, can you please just go back in time to the early 1950s and redesign the shape of that area for me, it would make my job a lot easier! Cheers! 😆

A beat up, pickguardless, and knobless 1953 #Gibson #ES295 spotted on a trip to New York City 6 years ago. Zoom in to see the crazy checking and heavy wear on the top…especially between the bass side F hole and the pickup switch! That finish is right down to the wood in places!

Note that the 1956 ES295 beside it looks to be beat up and pickguardless as well, but is priced at roughly $2k more. I can’t believe that mere knoblessness alone would devalue a roughly equivalent #guitar by so much! OK, that finish is in pretty sad condition, but I wonder what else was “wrong” with it? Maybe there was some structural issue e.g. a repaired headstock break? Sadly, the price tag makes no allusion to any possible “issues” present in either guitar…so we will literally never know!

1948 #Gibson #Super400 N (for “natural”) spotted at @thetwelfthfret #Toronto.
.
18 inch wide body, solid carved spruce top, figured maple sides, solid carved figured maple back, and maple neck with multi-bound ebony fretboard. This guitar did start out life as a natural but has been refinned some time ago. A bartoloni pickup has been added and the pickguard is a repro. Swipe left for a shot of the gold Grover Imperials and super sexy stinger.

To me this is the perfect 175. OK, OK, maybe a 1957 DN (double pickup, natural finish) with twin PAFs is the ultimate 175 lol, but a first year 1949 model with its early P90 is a close second for me! 😀

This #guitar is essentially an #ES175 with only one #pickup. Not sure how Gibson arrived at the calculation that the #bridgepickup is worth “10” in the model number, but just look at the figuring in that top! I like this guitar so much!
