1953 #Gibson #ES295, spotted yesterday at @folkwaymusic.

You don’t see many vintage 295s around (or modern ones for that matter!) and I just love it when the #goldtop gold finish has cracked and aged, and gone green around the edges like this one has. I don’t know the chemical formulation of Gibson’s goldtop gold…but I am going to wager it contains copper!

1957 #Gibson #ES295 with matching #GibsonGA30 #amplifier from the original owner!

Also dig the swag: Gibson catalogue and brochure, “vibrarest” on top of amp) and original box (in front of case, left), strings (front of case, right), Gibson club card (in case, right)…and my favourite…Gibson “multi selector” picks (lined up on edge of case top, left. The things that look like little throwing stars)! Each pick has three different picking surfaces of different thicknesses. Want to change from heavy to thin? No need to stop playing and change picks…just rotate your multi selector pick! 🤣

PS if anyone knows what these things are officially called, let me know…I just used the term “multi selector” for lack of the real name! 😂

ES295 WednESday, courtesy of @tomgibson3783’s 2013 #GibsonMemphis VOS reissue.

From a photography perspective I really couldn’t ask for a more aesthetically pleasing and photogenic #guitar. But I do have one small photography-specific complaint to the designers at #Gibson about the 295: the arched section that you guys put around the pickup selector switch makes for some weird, asymmetrical-looking shadows in a lot of pictures! You can sort of see the hump around the switch in this shot. It looks perfectly fine except when the light hits it the wrong way. Then it casts a wonky shadow across the top of the guitar. The result is you can’t just point and shoot with this guitar in any lighting setup and be guaranteed wonk-free results every time…you have really play around with the positioning of the guitar and/or the light source to get it to look not weird! Now, I’m not an inordinately lazy person*…but getting that shadow to not look bizarre causes a lot more work for me than it should! If you guys wouldn’t mind, can you please just go back in time to the early 1950s and redesign the shape of that area for me, it would make my job a lot easier! Cheers! 😆

1997 #Gibson Historic #CustomShop #ES295 spotted at @sherwoodkw in Kitchener, Canada.

Before Saturday, the last time I saw a 295 in person was over two years ago. That one was in a private collection. I cannot remember the last time I saw one in a #guitarshop. Then on Saturday I saw two of them in one day! First, my buddy @tomgibson3783 lent me his 2013 Memphis VOS…and half an hour later I’m visiting my first #guitar shop in 6 months and lo and behold…there’s another one! When it rains it pours, I guess!

How about a 1952 #Gibson #ES295 fpr WednESday? This was spotted at Guitar Center in #NewYorkCity many years ago (as you can tell by the price!).

A friend of mine (who shall remain nameless, but who has been known to lend me his #guitars and #amps for literally months at a time! 😆) just got a 2013 Gibson #CustomShop VOS reissue of one of these! This is VERY exciting because 1) it’s gorgeous, 2) you almost never see these around anywhere…the reissues are pretty much as hard to find as the vintage originals, and 3) it will make for INCREDIBLE photos once I get my grubby paws and even grubbier lens on it! Here’s hoping my (nameless) friend’s willingness to lend me his beautiful gear has not been diminished by the fact that I have deprived him of his avacodo-esque 1959 #Gretsch Anniversary and #LesPaul R7 since January (8 full months!), and his 1963 #Fender #Bassman since last autumn! I never intended to keep them this long…I swear! It’s COVID’s fault! Blame the pandemic for making me a de facto thief!! 🤣

A beat up, pickguardless, and knobless 1953 #Gibson #ES295 spotted on a trip to New York City 6 years ago. Zoom in to see the crazy checking and heavy wear on the top…especially between the bass side F hole and the pickup switch! That finish is right down to the wood in places!

Note that the 1956 ES295 beside it looks to be beat up and pickguardless as well, but is priced at roughly $2k more. I can’t believe that mere knoblessness alone would devalue a roughly equivalent #guitar by so much! OK, that finish is in pretty sad condition, but I wonder what else was “wrong” with it? Maybe there was some structural issue e.g. a repaired headstock break? Sadly, the price tag makes no allusion to any possible “issues” present in either guitar…so we will literally never know!

I dont think I have seen another vintage one for sale in the city since this picture was taken. I have seen a couple of reissues for sale and my buddy @moreguitar owns a vintage one (which I have posted previously) but they are pretty few and far between!
