HISTORY: Rinette Habelliard was born in Gridania, the second child and only daughter of a small Duskwight family. Her parents raised their children to be respectable, elemental-fearing and Nophica-worshipping members of Gridanian society, and were endlessly proud when her older brother Lancifer joined the Wood Wailers. Rinette, by comparison…well. She was surely loved, but the refrain which most often echoed throughout the household was “what shall we do with her?” She was too loud, too focused on their unpopular heritage, too ready to make waves—and she was sickly as well, with headaches that brought on fainting spells and hallucinations. The Calamity only made it worse, and so her parents and brother worked ever harder to support her.
Lancifer’s rise through the Wailer ranks did not go unnoticed. Nor did his Duskwight heritage, especially with how very proud his sister was of it. One dark day two of his comrades sought to teach him a lesson, planning to use Rinette’s corpse as an example.
She killed them both—one with his own knife, one with the magic she’d been studying in secret—and ran south, leaving blood and fire behind her. A band of Redbelly Wasp scouts helped her to the Shroud’s border with Thanalan. With only dead mens’ gil in her pockets and a stolen knife at her belt, Ritanelle Soleil set out for Ul’dah. The city welcomed her for many months, during which she studied as a thaumaturge by day and worked as a second assistant cook by night until one day, out of curiosity, she tried her hand at a mail-in placement exam for Mealvaan’s Gate’s newest crop of trainee arcanists. She’d always been good with numbers, after all.
Her score was high enough to get her a scholarship. It was while working in Limsa as an assessor that she met the Scions of the Seventh Dawn, learned of her power—the Echo, a blessing of Hydaelyn—and joined their cause. Her solid grounding in arcanima led her to the ancient Allagan art of summoning, and her Echo gave her the strength to withstand primal assaults. It was not long before she became known as a primal-slayer and attracted Garlean attention; after her starring role in Operation Archon, she became known to the papers as a Champion of Eorzea and, some added, a Warrior of Light.
She would rather be known for her diplomatic efforts among the “beast tribes,” honestly. As a Duskwight, she knew something of how they must feel, and so what started with the Amal’jaa began to stretch across Eorzea to the Kobolds and Ixal and Qiqirn as well. It was with their aid that she survived the Bloody Banquet and made it first to Camp Dragonhead and from there to Ishgard itself.
Her part in ending the Dragonsong War earned her the epithet Azureflame, which she carried forward into Ala Mhigo. Alas, her plans of finishing the fight against the Garlean Empire were permanently derailed by her comrades’ souls being pulled from their bodies and her own unplanned jaunt to the First, where she was faced with saving two worlds. At least she wasn’t alone; Avery Mordeterre, a fellow Scion, was willing to share the burden of Light and is likely the reason she survived. It was not much of a surprise to those around her when they started dating.
After she returned home, she spent time reasserting her footing on Hydaelyn, which led to her reconnecting with her Duskwight heritage via the discovery, quite by accident, of her extended maternal family. It gave her something to do, as during her time in the First the war with Garlemald had fairly decisively ended as the Empire collapsed from within. Meanwhile, relations with Eorzea’s tribes were improving and the Scions were thriving; for a while, she even dared to think things were looking up.
And then Fandaniel appeared on the world stage. The events of the Final Days—the loss of Hydaelyn not least among them—took a massive toll on her emotionally, and she took months to recover with the help of her friends and family. Anyone in the vicinity of Sharlayan or Revenant’s Toll during those times was highly likely to be the recipient of a randomly acquired hot meal; Ritanelle cooks when she’s stressed and there’s only so many pastries one can eat. Even physically she hasn’t been left unmarred; her hair is now streaked with gray, and her right arm was broken so badly that it still twinges.
Currently, she has been splitting her time between Thavnair, where she is learning their cuisine and dance steps, and the Serpent’s Nest, a Duskwight cultural center in the Shroud run by her cousins.

RP HOOKS:
“Say, aren’t you the one on Page 2?” - When the Scions have been involved in major operations (since the end of ARR, at any rate), Rita is usually all but shoved forward by her squad whenever the reporters show up. She’s pleasant, articulate, and gives a good interview likely transcribed in the local papers. Gridanians may note, and dismiss, the resemblance to one Rinette Habelliard wanted for murder.
“I’ve been having this monster problem…” - SAY NO MORE, FRIEND, Rita is happy to help! Side effects may include fire, aetheric scorching, and miniature primal egis scaring your sheep.
“Wanna hear a cool historical fun fact?” - If you’re any sort of scholar, particularly of Gelmorran ruins, you’ll find an eager audience and probably her all but begging to come with you on your next trip.
