HISTORY: Jaiyu is the firstborn child and only son of a Thavnairian merchant and a warrior of the Malaguld, who had a whirlwind romance for several years before a spectacular divoce when Jaiyu was young. Jaiyu was expected to follow in his father’s footsteps—herding sheep, protecting the tribe, probably marrying one day—but he was always restless. While his sisters grew up and settled into Steppe life, he looked up at the skies and envied the birds. It got worse when his father remarried and he decidedly did not get along with his stepmother and new half-sister.
When the Malaguld entered Reunion one year, he took the opportunity to leave with a caravan of Doman merchants. It didn’t come as a surprise. From Yanxia he took ship across the Ruby Sea, falling in briefly with a group of pirates before bidding them a cheerful goodbye and continuing to Hingashi—a parting which took place very quickly, in the middle of the night, because he also left with his pockets loaded down with other peoples’ plunder.
Kugane was a vast, confusing jumble, but it was a vast, confusing jumble with airship captains looking to hire on more crew, prior experience not required. And Jaiyu had always wanted to fly. Without hesitation, he signed on with a small ship ferrying goods from Hingashi to the Imperial province of Nagxia.
He had passed through Yanxia, but he hadn’t stopped to linger. He hadn’t seen. Faced with the full scale of Imperial cruelty, Jaiyu became determined to do something about it. He worked on that small ship for several years, scrimping and saving until he finally had enough to buy his own airship. What he wound up with was small, rickety, and not especially fast, but it was easy to improve. And, more importantly, it could be crewed by a single man if that man was willing to put in the work.
A few years after the Calamity, the Tormorjargal took to the sky.
It didn’t take long for Jaiyu to find his niche. Traveling from Othard through Thavnair into Eorzea and back was a common trade route, and nobody was too bothered if he made unscheduled stops in areas dealing with particularly heavy Garlean oppression. As the resistance movements ramped up, so did his involvement. Though he never formally signed on with any one company, he nevertheless fought in every conflict that he came across, taking part in the liberation of multiple nations.
It was the Bozjan campaign that wound up changing his life; when Zeiran eir Tahlar, a Garlean spy, stole his ship to escape, Jaiyu developed a nemesis. They fought across Bozja until the man was finally recalled to Garlemald, only to cross paths again when the city fell. Jaiyu, by pure chance, had been hired to extract Eorzean spies to safety, and Zeiran just needed to get out. Eventually they bonded, and when Zeiran was dragged back to Bozja for sentencing Jaiyu chased after him. For the sake of the man’s potentially-orphaned cat, of course.
When Zeiran was released and asked for help rescuing his estranged family from the fresh horrors caused by Fandaniel and the towers, Jaiyu really couldn’t blame the speed of their rush back to Garlemald on how cute the cat was. By the time Zeiran’s family was safe, Jaiyu’s former nemesis had earned a spot on his crew and in his bed. (Maybe even his heart, not that he’ll admit it.)
Currently, he can be found in bars across Eorzea and the Near East, drinking and chatting and having a grand old time as long as you don’t get too close or ask too many prying questions.
YOU MIGHT KNOW HIM IF…
–you sell ceruleum, wood, scrap metal, or nonperishable foodstuffs; the Tormorjargal is in constant motion
–you deal in…questionably legal substances; odds are Jaiyu’s willing to buy in bulk to resell later
–you spend a lot of time in bars, taverns, cantinas, or dance halls
–you’ve served in the fight to liberate Dalmasca, Doma, or Bozja; he was a common sight in all those conflicts, though he seemed to favor bows rather than the gun he carries now
–you’re a fellow member of the Malaguld
–you have ties to the merchants of Thavnair, in which case you might know his mother’s family
RP HOOKS:
“Looking to make a deal?” - If you’re selling, Jaiyu’s probably buying. Especially if whatever you’re selling is lightweight, nonperishable, and easily stored in bulk.
“Thank you for your service.” - He’s spent a great deal of time and efforts supplying (and fighting in) anti-Imperial rebellions across Othard; if your character served in any one of them, they might remember the tall guy with the bow and/or gun as being a friendly, enthusiastic sort.
“There ‘e is! Th’ captain of the Tormorjargal!” - Maybe you’ve been robbed by him. Maybe you’d like to shake his hand for blowing a pursuing Garlean craft out of the sky. Regardless, you might recognize him, his ship, or his gun.
